Now that X-Men: Apocalypse is almost upon us, our eyes (and thoughts) are naturally turning to the next movie in the franchise…Wolverine 3. Since the next Wolverine movie is going to be the final time that Hugh Jackman pops out the claws as our favorite Canadian Hero, it only makes sense that fans are wanting to get as much information as possible about the project. Here is what we know for sure:

  • Hugh Jackman is playing Wolverine
  • Patrick Stewart returns as Charles Xavier
  • Boyd Holbrook is playing the unnamed villain

That may not seem like much, and definitely not a whole lot of information to go off of. However, it was recently reported by Comicbook.Com that the film has started casting calls for “Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian looking females over the age of 21.” The call further goes on to state that they are specifically looking for women that are no taller than 4’11”, with dark brown hair, and are a size 0-4. Additionally, they are also looking for children that are aged -13 that fit the same requirements but no more than 4’5” in height.

There aren’t all that many Marvel characters that fit these requirements that have much of a connection to Wolverine. Granted, they could be going for an actress to play Jubilee, chances are that is not the character they are going for. Rather, I (and apparently quite a few other fans) believe that this is pointing towards X-23 making an appearance in the next movie. Beyond this, there are a few other things that you can take into account that help people come to the conclusion that Laura Kinney (X-23) will be showing up, and potentially taking the mantel of the Wolverine.

While it may seem like a bit of a stretch to go from potentially introducing the character of Laura Kinney to actually taking over as the Wolverine, the facts are there if you are willing to do a little bit of research and keep an open mind. First of all, is the fact that Wolverine 3 is reported to be the last time that Hugh Jackman will be showing up as Wolverine. This means that the X-Men franchise will be left without this very popular character in any future movies. By introducing Laura, the X-Men franchise will have someone that has the abilities, training, and even attitude to take on the role. It is something that has happened in the comic books after all.

Frankly, I hope that it is true that the character of Laura Kinney is being introduced. However, I am worried that they are not going to introduce her right, or portray her as some weak “knock-ff.” Does anyone remember when Remy LeBeaux (Gambit) was introduced? Not only did the character come across as a weak caricature of the suave and frankly awesome Gambit, it almost looked like he was a joke. Simply put, he wasn’t done right. I just hope that they are able to actually choose an actress that can do the character justice and be able to carry on the tradition.

Batman: The Killing Joke – Animated Movie

Batman: The Killing Joke - Animated Movie

One of the best, and most loved, Batman graphic novels is coming to film. The Killing Joke will be coming direct to you this July. Fans will finally be able to see the epic struggle Batman goes through with the Clown Prince of Gotham, the Joker. Will Batman break his one rule? Will the Joker get the last laugh? I for one am ecstatic that they are making this into an animated film.

Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy will be reprising the voices for the Joker and the Dark Knight as they did for Batman the Animated Series from the early 90s. This is a nice touch and tie in with these two being the classic voices for these characters. Something to keep in mind before you run out and buy this to watch with the kiddies, the Killing Joke will be R rated. While I am sad I will not be able to show this to my son, it gives me hope that they will keep the film as close to the novel as possible.

If you haven’t read the story before I would highly recommend this to any fan. Keep in mind this is a dark and gritty story, but it did shape DC comics for over 20 years. With fantastic plot twists and an ending that even the most diehard batman fan can agree with the Killing Joke will test the limits of what you can take with just one bad day.

The Punisher is Coming to Netflix!

Big news for Marvel fans yesterday morning: Marvel officially announced the coming of a The Punisher series for Netflix.

Rumors of a Punisher series have been circling around for the last year or so especially with the appearance of the character in the second of season of Daredevil. Yesterday those fan prayers have been answered as Marvel ordered a new series with Netflix. This is the sixth series that Marvel has ordered with the streaming giant along with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.

Jon Bernthal will be reprising the role as Frank Castle (AKA The Punisher). Steve Lightfoot of Hannibal fame will serve as the writer and executive producer of the show. No word on when it will release but I am guessing it will probably be early to mid 2017 until we see it.

Why I Hate Superman

Why I Hate Superman

Why I Hate Superman

Brian Peterson

Let me start of by saying right away that growing up I loved Batman. I not only wanted to be him, I also made my own homemade bat gadgets and wore out two full costumes. I would get so frustrated when my friends and I would play superheroes and someone would pick Superman. Typically, we would say, “No you can’t pick Superman, it’s not fun with Captain Every-Power!” There were many backyard arguments sparked because someone liked this overpowered hero that I so deeply hated. Today, I feel bad for how harsh we were to his fans.

As a teen I connected even deeper with the Dark Knight as I became frustrated at my parents, and wanted to do things my own way. I started working in a comic book store and was able to satisfy my desire to learn more about Batman’s mythos and I kept finding myself frustrated when grown men would come in and pick up or order anything Superman. I would say to myself, “What are these guys doing?” I just couldn’t figure out why they would spend their time on such a childish figure.

Flash forward to my late 20’s and I found myself married with kids, when, lo-and-behold, and my perspective started to change. Things like moral codes, and the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the one, started to play a much larger role in my life. Who I wanted my son’s to grow and be like started to be more important to me than how cool the hero’s utility belt was. I started to see the character for what he represented, and not for his stat sheet. This is when I started to love Superman.

Over time, I have come to appreciate the fact that Superman’s power is limitless. He has to show total control in all situations. With this example, I have been able to help my oldest son recognize how (and when) to use restraint with his younger siblings. Superman has become such an interesting hero to me because of what he stands for – “Truth, Justice and the American way” to quote the comics. However, it’s more than just that. Superman is a beacon of what any parent (particularly fathers though) want to be for their children, as well as what parents should hope their children turn out to be in the future.

Additionally, his stories are interesting since it isn’t about him overcoming some kind of physical trial or handicap, but rather it is about how he deals with the various situations he finds himself in emotionally. Let’s not kid ourselves here though, Superman is well…Superman; and he is one of if not the most powerful superheroes in all of comics. Keep in mind that it is not the physical abilities that have caused this change of heart for me as an adult and father. Rather, it is the example he sets for my children (as well as for me) that has drawn me to him. While, I still love the caped crusader it is different than what it was when I was growing up. Frankly, Batman is who I wanted to be, while Superman is what I want to become.

Now I know there are many that won’t agree with me on this, and will say that Superman is boring or uninteresting. You may feel his perspective is flawed since any being that powerful would have no time, or thought for “normal” people. Perhaps you may think that “He is old school and has old school values.” My only hope is that as your priorities change in your lives you will give the character a deeper look in the future. He is what all superheroes we know and love today come from. Here are some essential Superman stories that I would recommend you read in order to get a better grasp on who this character really is, and what he stands for. For those that would like some recommend reading on superman here are a few of my favorite stories with him, needless to say that they are some of my favorite stories that show exactly what Superman is all about.

By now, most people who follow Comic Con news has at least heard mention of the Salt Lake Comic Con. The Salt Lake Comic Con is one of the fastest growing such conventions in the United States. When the first such event was launched back in 2013, there were “only” 72,000 attendees. That attendance was almost doubled in last year’s event (2015) with over 125,000 attendees. There has to be something to this many people coming and spending their time, money, and vacation days to go and take part in the fun.

So, I hope that you are ready for the next epic offering from the offices of Dan Farr and Bryan Brandenburg, since the early bird tickets are now on sale. While it may seem a little early (the event doesn’t actually kick off until September 1, 2016), this is actually the best possible time to get your tickets. The reason for this is rather simple; by getting them early you can receive a rather significant discount on what you pay. But just why would you want to go and spend a minimum of $42 for the basic multipass that is being offered now (be ready to pay $70 at the door if you don’t take advantage of the offer now)?

The simple answer is the sheer number of amazing people that come to the Comic Con, and I am not just speaking of the stars and guests that come to such venues. The following quotes are taken directly from the Official Salt Lake Comic Con website in regards to the fans themselves, who are often the exact people that can make or break events such as this.

I had the pleasure of speaking at the first Salt Lake Comic Con and the experience was excellent in every way. The most important part was having a large and enthusiastic audience to talk to and in that regard I was blown away.

Today at [Salt Lake Comic Con 2015], I was in a photo op with Chris [Evans] and a man got down on one knee and proposed with a ring to his girlfriend. It was one of the most moving and beautiful things I have been witness to.
